Digital Transformation in the Food Wholesale Trade: Neurauter Frisch Advances Digitalization with Inventory Management Software from Remira

Many companies in the food wholesale industry are increasingly facing fluctuating market situations, delivery issues, and growing crop failures. These challenges are business-critical for precise and efficient disposition and demand new processes. Neurauter Frisch GmbH is taking exactly this path: The family business is strategically realigning its disposition, procurement, and warehousing to meet the increasing demands. By introducing Remira's sales forecasting and inventory management software, Neurauter Frisch lays the foundation for more efficiency, better availability, and the use of AI-supported forecasts – and thus demonstrates how digital transformation can look in the food wholesale industry.

The Neurauter Frisch GmbH, headquartered in the Austrian Ötztal-Bahnhof, is one of the leading food wholesalers in Tyrol. The family-run, medium-sized company supplies high-end gastronomy, hospitality, and communal catering in Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and South Tyrol, and works daily to offer them consistently high availability of goods as well as efficient processes. With a clear commitment to premium quality, regionality, and ultra-fresh products, the company offers a wide range of around 6,000 stocked items and an additional 8,000 pre-order items, which are managed through approximately 300 suppliers. However, in the food wholesale business, success is no longer determined solely by product quality. Equally important are stable processes, reliable forecasts, and logistics that function even under volatile market conditions. Companies like Neurauter Frisch, which work daily with thousands of items, tight delivery windows, and demanding freshness categories, face the challenge of rethinking their processes and digitally professionalizing them. Precisely for this reason, Neurauter Frisch is aiming for a comprehensive digitization that modernizes both the ERP system and the logistics processes. "Our main goal was to ensure better availability through digital transformation and to minimize the effort of disposition. After being made aware of Remira, the decision for the software was easy for us after the first talks and demos," says René Mark, Head of the Purchasing Department at Neurauter Frisch. Since the beginning of 2024, the company has been using software for sales forecasting and inventory management from Remira to make disposition more efficient, transparent, and future-proof, while also laying the foundation for further modernization projects.

Digitization as a Strategic Growth Driver

For René Mark, the modernization of scheduling was a crucial step. The previous scheduling through the ERP system was no longer sufficient with the increasing variety of articles and rising requirements. The introduction of the Remira solution therefore seamlessly integrates into the company's digitization strategy, which, in addition to new digital services, also includes the expansion of the ERP system and the introduction of a modern webshop.

In addition, a fully automated AKL warehouse is currently being constructed at the main site. With state-of-the-art robotics technology, logistics are expected to become even more efficient in the future and overcome the capacity limits of the existing warehouse. Automated scheduling forms a central foundation for this, as it creates stable processes that optimally harmonize with the future logistics structures.

Noticeable Increase in Efficiency and Relief in Day-to-Day Operations

“With the introduction of the Remira inventory management software, the daily work in procurement has changed significantly. Where previously five to six planners had to manually check each supplier daily, today only three employees work with the software – without any loss in quality or speed,” says Mark, and further explains: “Due to the reduced planning effort, we can now deploy the remaining planning staff in other areas of responsibility. This allows us to strategically allocate resources where they create the greatest value.”

The Remira software only shows the items and suppliers for which there is actually a need. Minimum order values, order days, and delivery times are automatically taken into account. Calculations, such as minimum order quantities in kilograms, which previously had to be done manually, are fully handled by the system. “The software relieves us of a lot of manual work and provides our employees with a relief they greatly appreciate – that's why they enjoy working with the solution,” Mark makes clear. The flood of data has become manageable, and planning is much more structured than before.

A key success is also reflected in the reduction of inventory: “With Remira, we have managed to reduce inventory by 15 to 20 percent during the peak season, without any impairment in product availability. The capital commitment has also noticeably decreased, and the stocks are much better aligned with the actual demand,” emphasizes René Mark. Despite global supply chains and volatile procurement markets, the company manages to minimize bottlenecks and respond more quickly. Although lost sales cannot be measured exactly yet, planners clearly see that the software improves availability and makes procurement more stable.

The noticeable advantages of the Remira solution also show in the disposition of fresh items. Already today, fruits, vegetables, and fresh meat are fully planned through the software, and items from the ultra-fresh area are currently being integrated. The high speed of goods procurement – including pre-order items organized overnight – makes automated disposition particularly valuable. Especially in the fresh area, where short shelf lives and volatile availabilities play a major role, the software ensures noticeable security and predictability. With the new warehouse structure and ongoing digitization, this area will benefit even more in the future.

Ready for the Next Joint AI Step

The collaboration with Remira is described by the procurement manager as very positive: “From contract signing to implementation, the project proceeded smoothly, quickly, and with a high level of professional competence.” The implementation also went smoothly thanks to the close supervision and support from Remira, allowing the software to be quickly integrated into ongoing operations. Due to the high level of satisfaction not only from the management but also from the employees, Neurauter frisch can envision further joint projects in the future – particularly in the context of ongoing digitalization and the new AKL warehouse.

A potential next step is the introduction of the new “Remira AI-Forecasts”. “We are very open to the use of AI and see it as an essential tool for future process optimization. Therefore, we are already specifically examining how AI-Forecasts can be integrated,” explains René Mark. He further emphasizes that AI is not meant to replace employees but to support them in performing their work more efficiently and with greater insight. Internal AI projects that aim to advance the company are already underway. Thus, the integration of AI-Forecasts would be a logical next step to further automate predictions and consider special cases more intelligently.

With Remira's inventory management software, Neurauter frisch has so far modernized its disposition, reduced stocks, accelerated processes, and utilized resources more efficiently. At the same time, the company is laying the foundation for AI-supported forecasts and a state-of-the-art, automated warehouse.
