New Schmalz exoskeleton is designed to relieve the lower back by up to 30 percent

No battery and no external power supply: The "Nexo Pro" uses a mechanical spring system to assist with bending and lifting movements and is designed, among other things, for warehouse logistics and order picking.

Schmalz introduces passive exoskeleton „Nexo Pro“ for lifting tasks

Schmalz expands its range of ergonomic handling systems with the trunk-bending exoskeleton „Nexo Pro“. The passive system is designed for repeated bending and lifting movements and, according to the manufacturer, is intended to reduce muscle strain in the lower back by up to 30 percent. The company sees potential applications in order picking, warehouse logistics, as well as goods receipt and dispatch.

Mechanical Spring System Supports Movement

The "Nexo Pro" requires neither an external power supply nor a battery. Instead, the exoskeleton operates with a mechanical spring system. This system absorbs force when bending forward and releases it when straightening up again. In this way, the system supports the back during the trunk flexion.

According to Schmalz, the support is provided without additional compression of the spine. The manufacturer also states that no maintenance effort is required for the passive system.

Support individually adjustable

The exoskeleton can be switched on and off with a single handle. An acoustic signal informs the user about the current switching state. Straps and control elements can be adjusted without tools.

Employees can also adjust the start and strength of the support themselves. Schmalz offers the NEXO Pro in two sizes. Breathable and washable materials are intended to enable use both indoors and outdoors.

Experiences from Logistics and Production Incorporated

According to Schmalz, the development took into account experiences from previous exoskeleton applications. This includes applications in logistics as well as in woodworking and metalworking. The feedback gained in these areas has been incorporated into the design of the new system.

The exoskeleton is intended for activities where employees repeatedly lift objects or bend forward. In addition to order picking and warehouse logistics, the manufacturer cites loading and unloading machines in woodworking and metalworking as areas of application.

Use in Trucks and Containers

Additional applications include assembly and post-processing work on large components. According to Schmalz, the exoskeleton can also be used in spatially limited work areas at the goods receiving and shipping departments.

This includes, for example, truck loading areas and containers. The passive functional principle operates without a power supply or charging infrastructure at the deployment site.
