Intelligent Automation: Ganter and TGW Logistics have been jointly advancing intralogistics since 1999

The Baden-Württemberg-based specialist for standard parts, Ganter, is consistently advancing its highly automated intralogistics to meet its customers' demands for reliability and short delivery times. For almost three decades, the family business has relied on the expertise and experience of TGW Logistics: What began with a tray warehouse in 1999 has evolved over the years into a strategic partnership—based on trust and a shared understanding of sustainable growth.

Founded in 1894 as a small workshop in the Black Forest, Ganter is today a fourth-generation, internationally successful specialist in standard parts. As early as 1912, the company consolidated its products in a catalog that standardized the offerings. This so-called Ganter Standard (GN) still forms the basis for standard parts from other manufacturers. The family-owned company from Baden-Württemberg supplies customers from the mechanical engineering industry with more than 70,000 standard elements: from operating and clamping to machine components.

Sustainable Investments in Intralogistics

Ganter sees investments in intralogistics as the foundation of a resilient supply chain and as the basis for long-term success. Therefore, the manual central warehouse at the company headquarters in Furtwangen was automated in several phases from 1999 to keep up with the increased demands on performance, flexibility, and throughput. "We consciously decided not to build from scratch on a greenfield site, but to go for a brownfield," emphasizes Ralf Beitlich, Head of Logistics at Ganter. "This decision was made for reasons of sustainable resource and space management – and due to our ties to the city of Furtwangen." Today, the logistics center reliably and quickly supplies B2B and B2C customers worldwide with standard parts of the Ganter Griff and Elesa+Ganter brands.

Production Supply and Customer Orders

During the automation planning, it became clear early on: the overall system must not only meet high expectations for performance but also adapt flexibly to changing conditions. The central challenge: to supply both production with replenishment and quickly deliver customer orders from all over the world to their destinations. The optimal setup for such diverse requirements requires above all: the intelligent integration of processes.

"This highlights the added value of the long-standing partnership that connects Ganter and TGW Logistics," emphasizes Markus Kammerhofer, Director Sales Retro at TGW Logistics. "A comprehensive understanding of the processes, detailed system know-how, and a lived service orientation have helped us develop solutions together that are tailored to the customer's requirements."

"Our collaboration is characterized by mutual appreciation and working at eye level. And always in a friendly exchange and with a certain wink," underscores Ralf Beitlich. "TGW Logistics strives to understand the challenges of its customers in detail and find solutions together with them. The collaboration does not end with the commissioning but continues into ongoing operations and service."

Intralogistics grows with business requirementsThe starting signal for the automation of manual processes was given in 1999 with a tray warehouse and goods-to-person workstations. Due to growth and the resulting need for capacity expansion, Ganter commissioned a three-aisle Automatic Small Parts Warehouse (ASPW) in 2007, which was supplemented by a fourth aisle in 2011. To be able to handle large quantities, TGW Logistics built a high-bay warehouse for replenishment supply in 2014. Five years later, the ASPW and the picking area were expanded again — including ergonomic pick-center workstations. In the course of this retrofit, the teams also updated the IT landscape to the current state. In 2021, Ganter commissioned TGW Logistics to comprehensively modernize the existing stacker cranes of the tray warehouse. In managing the highly automated system, Ganter relies on a lifetime services contract. This includes the supply of spare parts, remote services, and experienced onsite specialists who assist with maintenance.Latest shuttle technologyAs part of the "Strategy 2030" initiative, Ganter is investing in another extensive update, which is to go live in phases from the end of 2027. "Although we don't deal with seasonal goods, we are experiencing steady growth in products and variants of different sizes and geometries — from small parts to large components," says Ralf Beitlich. "This variety necessitates the expansion to be optimally positioned for the future." The retrofit experts from TGW Logistics are building a shuttle system with around 80,000 storage positions as a powerful centerpiece. In goods receipt, an individually adjustable robot takes over fully automatic depalletizing — ensuring replenishment for the shuttle and high-bay warehouse while also ergonomically relieving the employees. The Warehouse Management System (WMS) is also being brought up to date. "The goal of the expansion is not only a significant performance increase for optimal customer service but also improved ergonomics for the employees in their daily workflows," says Markus Kammerhofer. "With this, we are taking the next step in our collaboration together — and we are proud of it!" Translated automatically from German.
