Precisely position, efficiently compact: Würth Industrie Service and SSI Schäfer further develop picking robots together

Würth Industrie Service has further automated the picking process in its logistics center in Bad Mergentheim. To do this, SSI Schäfer integrated the fully automatic robotic solution "SSI Piece Picking" into the existing system in April 2026. The system automatically consolidates pre-picked items and is intended to increase the throughput of the existing picking technology. According to the companies, extensive technical modifications were not necessary for the integration. The robotic system was pre-assembled and functionally tested at SSI Schäfer's factory, allowing the on-site commissioning to be completed within a few days.

The new piece-picking cell in a compact gantry design is used for the automated consolidation of already pre-picked items on trays. The goal is to empty the trays faster and make them available again for pre-picking in a timely manner. For this purpose, the system identifies the items on the source trays in real-time, determines suitable gripping points, and controls the robot arm. This safely picks up the items and places them precisely at an appropriate position in the destination tray.

Pick & Place for Packaging up to Five Kilograms

The commonly used pick-and-drop mode in the market, where items are dropped or let fall over the target container, is not an option for Würth Industrie Service. This is because the product range of the C-parts supplier includes numerous products that are too heavy for collision-free execution of drop processes. To securely convey packages weighing up to five kilograms, the piece-picking cell at Würth Industrie Service operates in the "Pick & Place" mode. This mode ensures that the picked items are placed down deliberately.

Würth Industrie Service and SSI Schäfer seek to continuously develop the pick-and-place performance to a technically feasible optimum as part of their joint development partnership. In the pick-and-drop mode, this can reach up to 1,200 picks per hour. However, because the precise and gentle pick-and-place mode requires more time for the accurate and safe placement of goods compared to the pick-and-drop mode, such high performance values are not attainable.

Image Recognition Provides Detailed 3D Location Images

"SSI Piece Picking" uses a compact suction gripper that reaches every corner of a container and reliably picks up even the smallest parts. The portal robot picks from a source position and places the respective packaging on the target tray. To calculate the necessary source and target points and movements in real-time, the integrated image recognition system "Wamas Vision" is used. Its cameras create location images of the source and target trays and, based on this, calculate the optimal gripping points, optimized path curves, and target points for robot control. According to the order data from the warehouse management system "Würth WMS," the integrated robot control commissions and monitors the execution of the pick & place operations.

Development Partnership Aims to Further Optimize Robotics

The shared development partnership emphasizes the commitment of both companies to further develop innovative robotic solutions specifically tailored to the demands of modern intralogistics. The insights gained from the project flow into the optimization of existing processes as well as into future automation solutions.
