Mobile Robotics: AGV Conference Expands Thematic Focus

On September 23, 2026, the "User Forum on Mobile Robotics - AGV Symposium" took place at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund. Under the motto "AGV deployment is worthwhile: High throughput through optimized transport processes," over 140 participants from science and practice gained insights into current developments in the field of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and mobile robotics.

The event began with a keynote speech by Prof. Alice Kirchheim, head of the institute at Fraunhofer IML, on innovations in intralogistics. "In modern logistics, customers demand constant readiness to deliver on all channels, with rapidly changing assortments. With the right selection of autonomous mobile robots, companies are able to implement flexible, scalable, and resilient logistics systems – a crucial competitive advantage in volatile markets. Fraunhofer IML has already developed numerous innovative robotic solutions and is involved in both the German AI competency centers and the Robotics Institute Germany. Thus, we are a predestined partner in the field of Embodied AI," emphasized Kirchheim during the conference.

Mobile Robotics between Automation and Standardization

Throughout the day, seven practical specialist lectures, including topics such as "Automation Strategies at Volkswagen" and "Safety and Cyber Security for Mobile Robots," provided insights into automation and standardization. As the core of the afternoon program, Dr. Günter Ullrich, head of the VDI FTS Committee and the Forum-FTS, moderated a panel discussion on the topic "New Opportunities through Standardized Communication and Variety of Suppliers – but how does the Customer Manage the Complex Project Structures?". The event was accompanied by a trade exhibition with 22 exhibitors showcasing the latest state of FTS technology and presenting concrete solutions from leading manufacturers.

Branch meeting with a 35-year tradition The “User Forum Mobile Robotics – AGV Symposium” takes place every two years and now has a 35-year tradition. During this time, it has developed into the most important industry meeting. The target groups include all companies involved with Automated Guided Vehicles and mobile robotics. In 2026, the event formerly known as the AGV Symposium was held for the first time under the new name to account for the rapid developments in the field of mobile robotics.
