Intelligent shuttle system with extended application possibilities

Stein Automation GmbH & Co. KG has had its intelligent shuttle system “Stein link” classified for cleanrooms up to ISO Class 5. This makes the system suitable for production environments with the highest demands on cleanliness and low particle concentration, opening up new applications in medical technology, the pharmaceutical industry, as well as in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.

In sensitive production environments, cleanliness, process reliability, and controlled material flows place high demands on the automation technology used. At the same time, systems must remain adaptable to different products, variants, and future process changes.
Battery-Powered Shuttle Technology Instead of Classic Conveyor TechnologyUnlike classic conveyor systems, power rail solutions, and automated guided vehicles, "Stein link" relies on battery-powered shuttles. This eliminates the need for continuous energy supply along the travel route, simplifying installation, system planning, and future expansions. Each shuttle is equipped with its own battery management system, which continuously monitors the energy status and ensures reliable operation. The batteries can be changed both manually and automatically. This process is independent of the ongoing production process and does not affect the cycle times of the system. Thus, the material flow remains reliable and efficient even during long production cycles.

While Automated Guided Vehicles require large traffic areas and safety zones, the "Stein link" shuttles move along a clearly defined path and use the available production area efficiently. The independently operating shuttles enable flexible and plannable material flows, reduce mechanical wear, and ensure low-maintenance operation. The reduced space requirement as well as the lower installation and maintenance effort help to reduce investment and operating costs. At the same time, the system can be easily scaled for future expansions and is suitable for both new facilities and the expansion of existing production lines.

More Space for Modern Production Concepts

The modular plant concept opens up a variety of possibilities for establishing efficient material flows. Intelligent switches, lifts, and flexibly expandable routes facilitate transport across multiple levels, creating additional production space on the factory floor. This allows for optimal use of the available building space, especially where production areas are limited or future expansions need to be considered.

"The cleanroom classification is far more than a technical confirmation for us. It opens up new opportunities for our customers to flexibly automate material flows while meeting the highest requirements for cleanliness and process safety," says Armin Doser, Managing Director of Stein Automation GmbH & Co. KG.
