Conveyor technology for SKF: IPM Industrieprodukte Meißner automates material flow in bearing ring production

The conveyor technology specialist IPM Industrieprodukte Meißner GmbH from Donnersdorf in the Schweinfurt district is implementing two new conveyor systems for the roller bearing manufacturer SKF to link several machining processes. The systems will be used in a Schweinfurt plant of the manufacturer and are intended to optimize the material flow in the production of bearing rings. According to IPM, the project is shortly before commissioning. The plant manufacturer is responsible for implementation from planning and design through manufacturing to assembly and commissioning.

The first inquiry for the project was received by IPM in May 2025. In October 2025, the order was placed by SKF. The first partial delivery took place in June 2026. At the time of the announcement, the overall project was in the final phase before commissioning. The scope of services includes technical consulting, preparation of the offer, and complete design of the facilities using computer-aided design software. It also includes the manufacturing of individual components, delivery to the production site, as well as assembly and commissioning. According to the company, about ten employees from the areas of project planning, design, and assembly were involved in the implementation. IPM has already executed several orders for the rolling bearing manufacturer.
Conveyor Technology for Various Bearing Ring SizesThe two conveyor systems are based on aluminum conveyor technology with plastic chains. Each system occupies a footprint of approximately 100 square meters. Conveyor lines with a usable width of 100 millimeters are used, on which bearing rings with diameters between 60 and 180 millimeters are transported. The components weigh between 0.1 and 2.0 kilograms. Therefore, the conveyor systems must accommodate different product dimensions and weights within the specified transport ranges. In addition to the conveyor lines, the technical equipment includes accumulative buffer storage systems and pneumatic cylinders. The buffer storage allows for intermediate storage of bearing rings within the conveyor system. The pneumatic cylinders perform various functions in product control. They separate the components, stop their transport, or direct them onto the intended conveyor lines.

Integration of Different Processing Stages

A central technical requirement of the project is to link multiple processing steps of bearing ring production. The two systems are to handle the transfer of workpieces between production processes, thereby contributing to the optimization of manufacturing workflows.

According to the plant manufacturer, the reliable integration of different processing stages required a customized technical design of the conveyor technology. Therefore, the systems were tailored to the specific production conditions at SKF.

In the design, IPM also considered requirements for cleaning as well as maintenance and repair work. The systems should be designed in such a way that these activities can be carried out as easily as possible.

Customized Conveyor Systems Made of Aluminum and Stainless Steel

IPM develops and manufactures tailor-made conveyor technology and automation solutions. The range of services includes systems made of aluminum and stainless steel, which the company designs according to the requirements of the respective production processes.

The collaboration with SKF already includes several projects. With the two new conveyor systems, IPM continues the existing business relationship at the production site in Schweinfurt.

The plant manufacturer also has project experience in other industrial sectors. Previous orders include a conveyor system for the transport of sugar-coated gummy bears in stainless steel containers. According to the company, this is a larger project than the two conveyor systems for SKF.
